Patokh Kayumovich Shodiev

Dr Patokh Chodiev is one of the founders and shareholders of the Eurasian Resources Group (ERG), a noted entrepreneur and philanthropist. 

Having graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) and Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr Chodiev began his career in Japan in 1976. For over a decade, Dr Chodiev served as Counsellor of the USSR Trade Mission in Tokyo, as well as Chief Specialist for Russian-Japanese Economic Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Trade of the USSR. 

On leaving the diplomatic service in 1989, Dr Chodiev co-founded a global mining business which trades today as ERG. It is one of the world’s leading diversified natural-resources companies. Dr Chodiev also co-founded Eurasian Bank, one of the leading banking groups in Central Asia, and the Eurasia Insurance Company, Kazakhstan’s largest insurance company.

For many decades Dr Patokh Chodiev has been actively engaged in philanthropy. In 1996, he founded the International Chodiev Foundation (ICF), which implements extensive charitable programmes in the Eurasian region and Japan. Dr Chodiev’s charitable work is focused on supporting children and young people, providing access to education, and nurturing cultural relations and art. Dr Chodiev also supports vulnerable populations across the region, and serves on the Board of Trustees of the MGIMO Endowment, a development fund for his alma mater he co-founded in 2007. 

In 2005, he was awarded the Order of Kurmet by the President of Kazakhstan for his contributions to social, economic and cultural causes. In 2011, Dr Chodiev was awarded the Order of Barys for special service to Kazakhstan, including for industrial, scientific, cultural and social activities. In 2019, Dr Chodiev was awarded the Order of the Friendship of the Russian Federation for great services in the field of culture and art and, in 2020, the Order of the Rising Sun, one of Japan’s highest awards, in recognition of his long-standing contribution to the development of country’s economic and cultural relations.

Dr Chodiev is a member of the Kazakh Academy of Natural Sciences and Honorary Chairman of the Association of Japanologists of the Russian Federation. He authored more than 30 research publications on the history, politics and economy of Japan and is fluent in English, Japanese, Uzbek and Russian.
